I noticed today is #nationaldisabilityday. ironic, because I woke up thinking about how disabled (especially trans) bbs are the ones who get most dismissed in our attempts at interdependent love & sustenance.
I am absolutely certain that I would not be who I am & Saltwater Stars would not be what it is without the brilliance of my beloved intuitive strategist, who has become soul-family to me. as a disabled trans nonbinary queer, they have taught me so much about disability justice & living in liminal spaces. they have saved my life.
so we're trying to help save theirs. this really is about sacred reciprocity for a member of my community who has offered us so much just by existing.
We are raising funds as an act of care and mutual aid for a brilliant and beloved member of our community: an artist and creative facilitator who is facing multiple barriers to receive the care that they need.
They’ve been trying to access care for a number of years and for the past 3 years, their requests for government funded support worker hours have been denied. This is not uncommon as a very high percentage of disabled people continue to be denied help and have to jump through increasingly difficult loops that are designed to be used as proof of their capacity to function without help (thus continuing the cycle of denying their requests).
Their health is degrading and their situation is increasing in urgency, so we are turning to our community to raise enough money to allow them to hire sufficient help to continue fighting for government funded care while they establish a baseline of rest and recovery.
Funds raised will primarily go to paying part-time support workers for the next 6 months to a year. People who will help them establish a foundation of care that is currently lacking: food preparation, hygiene, cleaning, shopping, outings to the park, medical admin, etc. Any excess that isn’t directly salary for these people will still be used for healthcare costs that aren't covered by disability benefits, as the regulations where they live require them to maintain receipts for every transaction, and any unauthorised use can lead to suspension of their other benefits.
